R+ P Post 8: Possible tracks for the single

There were multiple tracks that we thought of using for the music video. We had to consider whether we liked the song and whether it was too long for us to use. The suggestions we made were:

Jorja Smith - Blue Lights

Positives:

• Contemporary political messaging that can be understood by our target audience, i.e. the fearful mentality of young, black me towards the police.
• A trendy solo female vocalist as the artist herself, so we can utilise Olamide's performing skills to mime her lyrics.
• The song is not too well known.

Negatives

• The song is longer than three minutes.
• We must be careful when dealing with how we will shoot such dark political messages and deal with the mellow nature of the song.

Seinabo Sey - Younger

Positives

• The lyrics are very imagistic, so we will be able to relate visuals effectively to the lyrics.
• Similarly to Jorja Smith, Seinabo Sey is a strong sole female singer, so it will be possible for us to utilise Olamide as the performer in the studio shots.

Negatives

• It would be difficult to retain the same powerful resonance of the song with visuals in the studio of one singer. It probably would be a lot more effective with a lot of actors, which would be unrealistic for us to achieve.
• Despite liking the song, it would be difficult to create an original music video that I would enjoy watching, as the song itself is very similar to many other power ballads.

Lorde - Tennis Court

Positives

• A solo female singer, so Olamide can perform in the music video miming the lyrics.
• Due to the vulnerable nature of the singer Lorde and the song itself, it is possible for us to use many voyeuristic techniques when exposing such female vulnerability.

Negatives

• The fast nature of the song would make the editing process more difficult with many quick cuts between the confusing beat of the song.
• The song is too popular and well known.

Daughter - Youth

Positives

• Their are strong female vocals.
• The song appeals to our age group.

Negatives

• The song has not got a fast pace and the video may appear too boring.
• It is too well known, so the audience will most likely recognise the song.

There were constricting rules placed on us when making our decision of song of the length of the song, not having explicit lyrics and not being too mainstream and well known. We were able to come up with a great catalog of songs to pick through that fitted within these boundaries and utilised us having Olamide available for performance. Therefore, we have looked at female-led tracks that we could all like, as we are examples of our own target audience that we want to appeal to.
