R+P Post 3: Music genres that interest me

If I had to narrow down the music genres i most like to a top three, they would probably be:
  • Hip hop
  • Drum and bass
  • Soul

Hip Hop
I like all sorts of Hip Hop music from the nineties in the US and nowadays I'm a big fan of Kendrick Lamar and a whole host of UK Hip Hop rappers. I especially enjoy listening to the sampling breaks that Hip Hop producers use finding the best moments of old Soul, Jazz and R&B classics to use for their songs. Most Hip Hop rappers tend to go for the nineties, baggy clothes look and are very passionate about 'sneaker culture'.

Drum and Bass
I'm not always in the mood to listen to Drum n bass, but it's good music to get pumped up to, whether it is Jungle or Jump Up, Drum n bass is the genre that releases the best bangers for nights out. What I would classify as the classic Drum and Bass MC look would be a flat cap and a t shirt. It's a messy genre of music and sometimes Jump Up is too repetitive, but every now and then you can find the perfect energetic tune to play on nights out. In my opinion Drum and Bass, Garage and House are all good music genres, as you can find great songs that fit in all those genres. The broadness of Drum and Bass as a genre, however, makes it superior. One can find MCs with ridiculous flow and filter through a catalogue of Jungle tunes that can be played in more of a chill environment.  The excitement and buzz Drum n bass creates, makes DnB the great genre it is.

Soul
I've always been a fan of soul music growing up. I love listening to the great soul legends of Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding, Etta James and Stevie Wonder. As well as these, probably my favourite singer is the more recent Amy Winehouse who I adore. For me, she represents everything great about London and the fact that she grew up in Southgate, where I've grown up, is incredible. As well as this, I'm a great fan of modern day Neo-soul acts such as Tom Misch and Jordan Rakei. It is no wonder that soul music is called 'soul' music, as it is very hard not to be emotionally attracted by the genre. Lyrics can be inspiring and voices can be beautiful. Soul music can be grandiose or minimalist it does not matter soul is the most heartfelt, tranquil, emotional genre in existence.
