R+P Post 12: Artists/bands that have influenced my ideas

Mabel

Mabel is a young, stylish vocalist that writes heartfelt songs and gets her friends to help produce for her. She now lives in London and she reps brands that are hyped by the youth today, helping her get noticed on social media and by her target audience of trendy, urban, teenage girls; who are much like herself. Her image is one of a bold, fashionable, young woman and that is the image I feel would be most attractive to the similar target audience that our artist would be aiming for. Mabel, therefore, is clearly a good artist to draw inspiration in terms of style.

Amy Winehouse

I doubt that any young, London-based, neo-soul singing woman will not take inspiration from the soulful, jazzy, iconic Amy Winehouse. She balanced her ballsy, mischievous charisma with such humble, human frailty combined with a great respect for the soul masters of the past. This allowed her to become the legend that she is with such a natural ability, consistently writing and singing beautiful songs one after the other. Her two living albums 'Frank' and 'Back to Black' are two of the best albums around. She will have definitely influenced our ideas in terms of displaying her similar personality; having great London centricity, strong attitude, and  feminine frailty. In order to attract the target audience of soul lovers that were drawn in by the eyre of Amy Winehouse, we have to try mirroring these aspects to attract that target audience.

Erykah Badu

In terms of voicing up against racist police brutality, Erykah Badu has an entire album 'New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)' focusing on the issue. She has always spoken up over issues of black-on-black violence, black representation, and police brutality on black people. As an artist, she embodies her African heritage and aims to inspire others to learn about the importance of African history. She is arguably the most influential soul artist around today and has made a vast amount of jazzy songs as well as bassy R&B tunes, managing to always retains a great level of soul to her music whatever facet of music she jumps into. Her valiant, spoken nature over political matters mirrors her creative boldness when expressing herself through the tasteful, eye-catching outfits she wears. She is a great role-model for other artists to speak up over issues of black discrimination and so is a great inspiration for expressing this similar mentality with the lyrics of the song 'Blue Lights' in our artist's music video.
